If you would like to set up a website for your small business or product, then there are a few basic steps that you should follow in order to create an online presence for your idea or brand. There are, of course, a variety of ways to get your name out using the internet, but the best and most effective way is to launch a site that is unique and designed to reach your target audience. Here's how to get your website up and running:
- Obtain a domain name. The domain name is the address that your visitors will type into the internet browser in order to reach your site. For instance, example.com is a a domain name. It is unique to your site and helps people to find you amongst the millions of other websites. A domain name is inexpensive, and will typically cost around $10.00 per year, depending upon whether you want a “.com” or not, as a “.info” or a “.us” will usually cost less annually.
- Find a web hosting service. Web hosting allows for you to upload your files to the hosting company's server so that your content is there when someone visits your site. There are a variety of web hosting services online, and you should expect to pay anywhere between 5 to $15 per month.
- Design the site. This step is the most complicated, as you'll have to have some prior knowledge of website design if you want to do it on your own. There are a number of designing tools at your disposal, such as Microsoft FrontPage, Notepad or Dreamweaver, amongst others. However, you will need to know at least a bit about coding, such as HTML or XHTML beforehand. These scripting codes dictate the look and content of your site. There are also more complex codes, like PHP and ColdFusion, which enable you to create more dynamic sites. In addition, there are pre-made website scripts that you can install, such as Mambo and e107, that you can alter yourself, but this also requires some knowledge of coding to get the layout and content just how you would like for it to be.
If all of this seems as though it may be a bit too time consuming or involved, then you might want to consider hiring a web design company to do it for you, though they can be a bit expensive at times. All in all, designing a site might seem like a rather daunting and difficult task, but taking a bit of time to view some free online tutorials will usually provide you with enough information to get the job done.
